Guinea Pig Cages & C&C Enclosures

Guinea pigs are chatty herd animals with short legs and big space needs. Two things make or break their housing: enough open floor, and a friend to share it with.

Floor space for a pair

Keep guinea pigs in twos — they're herd animals and shouldn't live alone. For a pair, aim for at least 1.0 m² (about 10.5 sq ft) of open floor; a single pig needs roughly 0.7 m² (7.5 sq ft), but you'll want the space for two regardless. As always, more is better.

Why C&C cages win

“C&C” (cubes-and-coroplast) enclosures are popular for a reason: they're roomy, ground-level, and easy to expand as you add space or pigs. Whatever the style, the floor should be solid — never wire, which injures their feet.

Furnish for a herd

Give each pig its own hide so no one gets cornered, keep a constant supply of hay, and add ramps gently (guinea pigs aren't climbers — keep levels low and safe). A calm, ground-level layout suits them best.
